Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise?
We had been directly working with the previous owner of Recognition Express for a number of years as he spoke about retirement; we saw this as an ideal opportunity to become actively involved within the franchise.
As an established franchise, it already had a good grounding for ourselves to add some of our expertise to develop the business and grown the business by the use of diversification and introduction of new business clients.
What did you do before taking up a franchise?
We are already involved within another synergistic franchise, and saw this as an additional service we could offer to our client base.
How did you raise the finance?
What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
As the business was already established, we had the staff in position to ensure the continuity. So no initial training was required.
Ongoing we receive support as follows:
- Marketing material and structure
- Help with suppliers
- Support and guidelines to assist production
- Group Best Practice meeting
What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?
Our Franchise is run by our operations Manager, Daniel Bevis, his typical day is as follows:
7:30am – Start
Check emails and deal with urgent enquiries
Meet with Production team at 9am and go through the jobs scheduled for the day and discuss any issues – We currently have three production staff.
The morning will then be usually spent dealing with orders, quoting and speaking to customers on the phone.
I try and schedule any meetings with customers for early afternoon, will also try and mix this in with taking as many local deliveries as I can – it’s important to us that we’re always adding the personal touch, and delivering as many orders as we can is a big part of that.
From about 3.30 onwards I will be back in the office, catching up with the emails from the day and dealing with any new enquiries
All being well, usually be out of the office for 5.30 but there are many occasions when I will still be here until late hours!
What challenges have you faced?
The key challenge was diversification of the business, to create a greater turnover. The established business has a large solid base for badges.
The key in the success was to develop the existing client base into other areas to allow expansion.
Within the four years we have been in business, we have developed this business to now currently run 3 embroidery machines, which usually run at capacity.
We also had a very small client base with a 5 mile radius; we have increased our customers locally by word of mouth and attending local networking meetings.
What differentiates your franchise from the competition?
We are part of a franchise network, which ensure that we stay ahead of the competition. The network supplies us with the knowledge of products and gives an insight into what is happening outside of our area. We also have the ability to buy goods cheaper as part of the national agreements with suppliers.
The network also allows us to speak with others within the network to discuss products and get opinions.
In your opinion, what makes a successful franchisee?
Infrastructure to ensure the business has continuity.
Knowledge of the marketplace and what our customers’ requirements are.
Continued reinvestment in staff and equipment
What are your plans for the future?
Continued reinvestment in technology and people to develop this business further and development with clients within our territory.
